Best in more trouble, again misses training
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) MANCHESTER. George Best, the tempestuous Irishman whose soccer career with Manchester United has been plagued by controversy, failed to turn up for another training session on Monday. Best was reported to have been seen at Manchester’s Ringway airport. The Northern Ireland international forward was dropped from Manchester United’s team which played Norwich on Saturday after he completed only one out of five training runs last week. He was expected to face the club’s board of directors today, but the United manager, Mr Frank O’Farrell,
said that the date for the meeting had not yet been fixed. This is the third successive week that Best, aged 26, has missed training, and four days ago he was served with a summons which alleged he assaulted a 20-year-old girl in a Manchester night club. The case is to be heard on January 11. Best, who is serving a three-match World Cup ban after being sent off against Bulgaria in Sofia in October, shocked the soccer world last season when he failed to turn up for a Northern Ireland international match and said he planned to quit the game.
