BACK TO FORM

Century by Walters (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. The test batsman, K. D. Walters, hitting 159 in a brilliant return to his best form, led New South Wales to its first Sheffield Shield win of the season yesterday. Set 325 to win by Western Australia, New South Wales achieved the target with four wickets and 12 minutes to spare. Walters, whose only previous good score this season was a century in an earlier match against Western Australia, scored 17 boundaries in a faultless exhibition before edging a catch to the slips. The all-rounder, K. J. O’Keeffe (56), and the former test wicket-keeper, B. Taber (32), steered the state past the required total in an unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 85. D. K. Lillee was the most successful Western Australian bowler, with three for 104, but he and his test partner, R. A. Massie (one for 105), were generally ineffective on a sound wicket.
