Carter Holt confident

Carter Holt Holdings, Ltd, has experienced an improvement in turnover and earnings for the six months to September 30, as compared with the same period last year. The directors say in the half-yearly report that they are confident that under present conditions this improvement will be maintained for the second half, leading to a satisfactory result for the full year. They have declared an interim dividend of 5c a share (5 per cent), payable on December 20, ex dividend December 8. The new shares rank for two-thirds of the dividend. The directors also announced that the company has purchased for cash the charcoal manufacturing and distribution interests of A. W. Bryant, Ltd, Auckland, and A. W. Bryant (Manawatu), Ltd, Palmerston North, and the solid fuel business of A. W. Bryant, Ltd, Auckland. Carter Holt hopes to produce thousands of tons of charcoal a year from bark, which has, in the past, been virtually a waste by-product of the timber industry
