TRADE WITH E.E.C.

Swiss show support (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) BERNE, Dec. 5. The Swiss electorate voted solidly in support of their country’s agreed trade relations with the European Common Market in a weekend referendum marked by an unusually high turn-out. The final official result announced last night was 1,345,057 votes in favour and 509,350 against the industrial free trade agreement signed by neutral Switzerland and the European Economic Community in July. Compared with the usual turn-out at the frequent Swiss referenda of about one-third of the electorate, 51.2 per cent of those eligible to vote went to the polls on the E.E.C. issue. The Swiss Economics Minister (Mr Ernest Brugger) who was in charge of the protracted negotiations with the E.E.C. commented at a press conference last night: “The result we obtained is the best we could have hoped for. “Our co-operation with the E.E.C. is thus launched on the best possible basis.”
