Car ownership up 22 per cent

In the 10 years from 1959, car ownership in the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority’s district rose by 22 per cent, leav- 1 ing only 21 per cent of households without a f car, and 26.5 per cent with two or more cars.

These figures, from a study undertaken by a transport survey committee, were given to a meeting of the authority yesterday with the comment that though household units had increased by 35 per cent in the 10 years, some travel factors had risen by much faster rates.

Total internal travel by all motor vehicles had increased 1.63 times, equivalent to a growth of 21 per cent per household. Goods vehicle movements in the central city had risen 1.67 times, and the growth of traffic between suburbs had grown 2.4 times, compared with a growth of 1.2 times for traffic from suburbs to city. In the 10 years, bus passengers to the centre had declined by the equivalent of 29 per cent in bus trips per household, and bus traffic be-

tween suburbs had dropped even more.
