Arahanga sails

(N.Z. Press Association)'

WELLINGTON, Dec. 5. The Railways new s9m ferry, Arahanga, left tonight for its test run to Picton, eight days later than scheduled. It left a day after the Railways and the Seamen’s Union had agreed on an interim settlement to the manning problem. The Arahanga will go through linkspan tests at Picton and is due to return to Wellington tomorrow afternoon. The interim settlement reached after three days of talks-chaired by the Chief Industrial Mediator (Mr J. D. Gibb) allowed six motormen to be signed on the ship’s articles for two months; during that time an independent arbitrator would decide the ferrv’s engine-room manning. The union had said six motormen were needed; the Railways said four.
