Extra staff for mail
The Post Office will engage 385 additional temporary staff next week to help it over the Christmas rush. The extra staff will be used mainly in coping with the deluge of mail expected during the next three weeks. At the Chief Post Office in Christchurch, 115 will work with permanent postmen and 82 will help in the mail room. Another 113 will work in suburban offices handling mail and on counter duties. The rest of the temporary staff will deliver telegrams. Most of the extra workers are secondary-school boys and girls, who will work in 140 suburban offices in the postal district. Many of those engaged have had experience in the Post Office during previous summer vacations. Some adults have returned each year and have been of great assistance to the Post Office because of their knowledge of the work. A few university students will stay on after Christmas to help with the clean-up and take over - postal-delivery duties while permanent staff take annual leave.
