MUSEUM WING

The Canterbury Museum Trust Board would make new approaches for a substantial Government grant or subsidy to enable its new building to proceed immediately, the director of the Museum (Dr R. S. Duff) said yesterday. Dr Duff said a sympathetic reception had been given by Sir Keith Holyoake and Mr Marshall during their terms as Prime Minister, and the board would make a new approach to the Prime Minis-ter-elect (Mr Kirk). The grant sought will be about $150,000, representing the final balance of the estimated over-all cost of $650,000 for the hundredth anniversary wing. With more than $200,000 to hand in pledges from the public, the Museum Trust Board’s building fund of $150,000, and a proposed loan of $150,000, the local community would contribute $500,000 to the new building. Dr Duff said. The board would call tenders for the new wing the moment a favourable reply was received from the Government, he said. In anticipation of this, the board has invited potentially interested contractors to file their names with the board’s architect,-Mr J. Hendry.
