Opposition to tour
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 17. If a poll were taken the Government would find that most Polynesians in the country were against the Springbok Rugby tour, said the president of the Samoan Progressive Association of New Zealand (Mr M. S. Fonoti). “Let’s not fool ourselves that the majority of New Zealanders want the tour,” said Mr Fonoti, ‘‘because most Polynesians are too polite to express their views publicly, and are quite content to stand aside. “But when it comes to the question of where their sympathy lies —it is very much against the tour. “If there were a poll to find out where the majority is going to be, then I’m afraid the majority, if not all, of the Pacific Islanders would be against the tour, especially on the South African terms of an all-white team,” said Mr Fonoti.
