St Margaret’s wins S.I. final of Schools Business Game

A team from St Margaret’s College won the South Island final of the 1972 Schools Business Game on Saturday.

The other finalists were Christchurch Boys’ High School, which was second, Lincoln High School (third), Kaikorai Valley High School, and Otago Girls’ High School.

The five teams came through to the South Island final after a series of regional contests in the Business Game, organised by the New Zealand Society of Accountants.

On Saturday two computers were used, one in Christchurch from which printouts were available to the three schools from the Canterbury area; and one in Dunedin, with printouts for the two Dunedin schools. The two divisions of the

final were linked by toll communications through the Post Office at set times during the day—to exchange information about decisions, and to check that the computers were throwing out identical information. Although St Margaret’s were leading from the second decision onward, the game was very closely contested, with the result still in doubt until the last round. The St Margaret’s team will now go forward to the national final in Wellngton on September 23.

“There was enormous enthusiasm abeut this final,” said Mr J. Cree Brown, the organiser for Canterbury, of the School Business Management Game. “The result printout sheets were pounced upon as soon as they were out of the computer.” The winner and runner-up owed their result to a consistent business strategy, Mr Cree Brown said. St Margaret’s especially had production going at a good level early in the game, and thereafter kept a good balance between production and orders, which are affected by decisions on pricing, marketing, and research and development. The strategy of Christchurch Boys' High School was similar. One of the Otago schools borrowed too much earlier on, and was faced with very high interest charges, from which they could not recover, Mr Cree Brown said.
