Ten teams for senior netball
After grading games on Saturday, the Canterbury basketball executive decided that 10 teams will compete in the senior competition this season. The teams will be Sacred Heart A, Technical A, Hagley A, New Brighton A, Riccarton A, Burnside A, Teachers’ College A, St Nicholas A, Sacred Heart B, and Technical B. Of the eight teams playing in the senior competition last season, Teachers* College B was the only team to be relegated to senior reserve ranks. Four senior reserve teams — Bumside A, Sacred Heart B, St. Nicholas A and Cashmere A — were played against each other to find the strongest teams to enter the senior grade. These i teams played two and three ' games each, and results in- . dicated Cashmere A must re- . main in the senior reserve 'grade. After the first round of ; games, the senior grade will 1 be split; the top five teams i playing off in section one, . and the bottom five in section ■ two. In the senior reserve section. University A, and Burnside B, were promoted from the B senior reserve to senior reserve A. Teachers College B was relegated to senior reserve B. To strengthen the senior reserve B grade, it was decided that the grade be reduced from three sections to two sections, which meant that 12 teams were relegated to second grade. Thev are Teachers’ CoUege C, D, E, F, G, Villa Maria B, Papanui High A, Bumside D. Casebrook A. Hagley C, Hornby A, and New Brighton B. There were no surprises in the senior grading games on Saturday. Sacred Heart A and Technical A proved too strong for Rlccarton A and Teachers' College A, and ran out easy winners. The match between New Brighton A and Hagley A was closely contested, both teams being of equal strength. Hagley’s win was due to its more-experienced players. St Nicholas A took a hard-fought victory over Technical B, and Bumside A completely overwhelmed a weakened Teachers* CoUege B team. TWO GAMES Cashmere A narrowly defeated a tiring Technical B team playing its second game of the day, and Sacred Heart B won easUy from Teachers College B. also playtag its second game.
