Road cycling season opens
The Olympic Games nominee, B. G. Stockwell, was a convincing winner on the opening day of road cycling on Saturday. The major aggressor throughout the A grade race at Fapanul, Stockwell eventually broke away with C. J. Tabak and easily beat him in the sprint home. Meanwhile, in the Avon club’s A grade handicap race, a middlemarker, D. 3. Savage, won a sprint finish while K. F. C. Radburne took fastest time. The consistent A. A. Bouterey won the B grade race, while A. J. Howison was fastest, from L. Bishop. Papanul held four graded scratch races, and K. J. J. Grogan repeated last year’s performance in leading home the B grade field. It was his first competitive appearance since an illness in August. J. F. Delore, not surprisingly, won the C grade race, although it was expected R. D. Mann would feature more prominently at the finish. New riders filled all the placlngs in the D grade race—like all the others, over 15 miles—with M. L. Tulett a comfortable winner. Results: PAPANUI A grade.—B. G. Stockwell 1, C. J. Tabak 2, P. D.
