‘SET-BACK TO CHINA’
View of Indian success (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PERTH, March 29. The Australian Opposition Labour Party’s spokesman on foreign affairs, Mr Kim Beazley, said last night that the India-Pakistan war had resulted in a set-back of Chinese plans for the fragmentation of India. Speaking on a television programme, Mr Beazley said that it was crucial to China’s interest that the Indian system of progress through democratic means should be seen to fail, “If the Indian pattern of problem-solving is seen to succeed, then other states of Asia will be less likely to tum to the methods of Chinese communism,” he said. “One result of the Indo-
Pakistan conflict is that the Chinese-orientated Naxalite guerrillas operating in India are no longer able to retreat into a safe haven in what was East Pakistan. “Another result is that, with the establishment of Bangladesh, Moslems resident in India can now look to a Moslem state friendly to India, instead of looking to an essentially hostile Pakistan."
