Anti-litter appeal <N.Z. Prest Association) WELLINGTON, March 31. : “Keep New Zealand clean this Easter” is the slogan of an anti-litter appeal made by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Highet). Litter was unhealthy, dangerous, a fire hazard, and costly to clear, he said. “Food scraps left in the open will attract flies to plague other picnic parties,” he said. “Smashed bottles will later give somebody a hurried trip to surgery. In addition, the magnifying-glass effect produced by sun on broken glass is a well-known source of fire.” Every careless action added to unsightly accumulations of rubbish. “A little thought, a little direct action, tire carrying of litter a few yards more, or putting it in the car for proper disposal later, is all that has to be done,” Mr Highet said. “We rely, of course, on local authorities maintaining sufficient receptacles available in public areas, so that people can dispose of their litter,” he said.
