Close games in squash
The American system of scoring added greatly to the interest in first-round matches of the squash rackets tournament in aid of the Commonwealth Games fund, which began last night at the Chester Street courts. There were many close matches, especially in the lower grades, where several seeded players had narrow wins and two were defeated. The second seed in the men s A grade, V. W. J. Hargreaves, was hard-pressed in Ns first two games with R. Steinmetz, and in the third Steinmetz led 6-1 before Hargreaves, playing to a better length and volleying crisply, took full control and won the game at 15-8. J. Moseley (Bumside) surprised by starting with a rush against M. Billington, who seemed uncomfortable playing under the trial rules. Once he settled down though, Billington s superior pace and aggression enabled him to take the next three games comfortably. Results of first-round matches: Men’s A grade.-L. Piever beat G.
