Local government hearing dates set
The Local Government Commission has arranged a aeries of meetings in April and May to consider objections to its proposals for the reorganisation of local government in North Canterbury.
On April 26, the commission will hear submissions concerned with its proposals for the creation of two new counties north of the Waimakariri River. These are “Hurunui,” which would require the amalgamation of Cheviot and Amuri counties, most of Wai-
para County, and parts of Ashley, Oxford, and Kaikoura counties; and “Ashley,” which would, on the commission’s scheme, comprise the counties of Ashley, Oxford, Rangiora, and Eyre, and the boroughs of Kaiapoi and Rangiora. On April 29, the commission will hear the views of those affected by proposals for the two counties it wants to create south of the Waimakariri, “Banks” and “Selwyn.”
“Selwyn” would comprise Malvern County and parts of Ellesmere, Paparua, and Eyre counties, and "Banks” would be made up from Wairewa and Akaroa counties, and the rest of Ellesmere. ,
Submissions on the proposed reorganisation of fire authorities will be heard on May 1. The commission wants to abolish 18 authori-
ties now operating in counties and bring them Under four new authorities, operated bv the new county councils, and to enlarge the duties of the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board. On May 2, and on succeeding days as necessary, the commission will hear objections to the scheme for the enlargement of Christchurch Citv by including in it the counties of Waimairi, Paparua. and Mount Herbert, and the boroughs of Riccarton and Lyttelton.
