Air fares cut
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyrignt) SYDNEY, Mar. 31. Qantas has announced a cut-price, one-way Sydney-to-London air fare of about SNZ42O, to come into effect from tomorrow. And in London, the British Overseas Airways Corporation has announced it will match the offer. The fare, more than SNZ2SO cheaper than the regular one-way fare, was announced after a meeting in Sydney yesterday between Qantas and Australian representatives of 20 world airlines. It is seen as a reply to air charters.
A 8.0.A.C. spokesman said in London: “A new single air fare between Britain and Australia of £196 (about SNZ42O) is being introduced by 8.0.A.C. on Saturday, subject to Government approval.” The International Ajr Transport Association agreement on the Australia-Europe route expired today. In Washington, the United States Aeronautics Board yesterday announced the approval of fare increases from the American west coast to Australia of between 6 and 11.4 per cent, effective from tomorrow.
