Fighting inflation
Sir,—“Risk-Taker” is certainly taking a risk in having confidence in Mr Marshall’s stabilisation measures. Since the war this country has been run on a “let-all-grab-what-they-can” basis. I know of no serious attempts at public discussion of principles governing fair distribution of financial rewards, and until there are such principles, and some public consensus on them, there can be no stability for more than short periods. Maybe Mr Marshall’s policy, which makes no attempt to grapple with the knotty problem of principles of justice, will succeed until the election, if the F.O.L. does not create storms. If there are no such storms, Mr Marshall will be able to stand, smiling and talking of being firm and steady, at the steering wheel of the ship of state, and hardly anybody will notice the fact that under the surface there is no rudder. It fell off long ago.— Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. March 30, 1972.
