Riverbank litter
Sir/—I have noticed people sitting in Latimer Square and on the riverbanks eating
lunches. Then the matter of disposing of the rubbish crops up, and rubbish tins in these areas are rare, if there are any at all. The rubbish goes into the river on the Avon and in Latimer Square it is left on the seats and the ground. Could something be done about this? Perhaps the tins could be attached to some of the trees around the areas.—Yours, etc., ■ RUBBISH-HATER. March 20, 1972.
(The Town Clerk of Christchurch (Mr M. B. Hayes) replies: “Some time ago litter baskets were installed in Latimer Square, but it was found that these were used by local residents for household rubbish. The problem became so acute that it was necessary to remove the baskets as reserves department staff were unable to cope with the disposal of the litter. Regarding the river banks, rubbish receptacles are available in a number of areas additional receptacles may still be required in some parts. This matter is a present being investigated, together with the feasibility of again installing a limited number of receptacles in Latimer Square.”]
