Lewis Pass power
Electric power flowed for the first time in the Lewis Pass area at 4.45 p.m. on Tuesday when the first consumer on the North Canterbury Electric-power Board’s $60,000 electrical reticulation scheme was connected. The remaining 15 or 16 consumers on the scheme were connected yesterday. Construction of the 26mile, 11,000-volt line began in September last with the installation of about 400 poles to carry the line. A total of about 600 poles was required to carry the line the 26 miles from Lochiel to the Ministry of Works camp. Although the high-tension lines are above ground, the majority of the low voltage lines have been placed underground. Authority was given to the board to raise a $160,000 loan to finance capital works including the Lewis Pass scheme. A $5900 subsidy was made available to the board by the Rural Electrical Reticulation Council to help supplement the board’s annual revenue from the new line. This revenue will be $9900—55900 in subsidised money and the balance from consumer guarantees.
