444 traffic offences

Traffic officers in the city area dealt with 444 driving offences between Christmas Eve and yesterday, the most prevalent being exceeding the speed limit, failing to comply with traffic lights and following too closely, Chief Traffic Officer I. W. McLauchlan said last evening. Six motorists gave positive breath tests, he said, and officers took the keys from several others. Officers also assisted about 80 motorists with directions or with minor mechanical repairs. Traffic in the city had been fairly quiet since Christmas Eve, but although there had been no serious accidents I there had been more minor jaccidents than during the same period last year, Chief Traffic Officer McLauchlan I said.
