The adaptable Welsh
Although there are plenty of highland areas ■in the tropics where the climate is temperate enough for British sheep, a speaker in the 8.8.C.’s “Farming World” pointed out, British sheep do not always breed there. This is because in Britain sheep begin to breed as the days shorten with the approach of winter, whereas in the tropics the hours of daylight are virtually the same all the year round. It has been left to Wales to uphold the breeding qualities of British sheep. Tests on seven breeds exported to Colombia in 1967 have shown that the Welsh mountain sheep are least bothered by the changed day? length.
