Death of Air Marshal Sir Roderick Carr

Air Marshal Sir Roderick Carr, K.8.E., C.8.E., C. 8., D.F.G., A.F.C., 0.8. E., who fought in two world wars, has died in the Royal Air Force Hospital at Uxbridge, England, at the age of 80
He was born in Feilding and served in the New Zealand forces in Europe during the First World War. He transferred to the Royal Naval Air Service and learned to fly. He joined the R.A.F. on its formation, and served until his retirement in 1947. In 1919, he was a member of the British expedition
which fought with White Russian forces against the Bolsheviks and two years later he was in the Antarctic with Shackleton’s expedition. In 1927 he commanded the first non-stop R.A.F. flight from England to the Persian Gulf. From 1936 to 1939, he served as a pilot in the carrier Eagle on the China station, and was in the advanced air striking fdrce in the retreat across France in 1940. Later he held two major administrative posts within the R.A.F., and in 1946 went to India as air officer commanding in chief. He is survived by a sister, Mrs P. Macfarlane, of Auckland.
