India and Pakistan
Sir,—New Zealand should recognise the new Bengal nation now. The fact that it gained its independence through Indian army action should not cause us to hesitate, since the political division of Pakistan was inevitable. We saw this during eight months of guerrilla warfare, when no outside observers except the Chinese suggested that the two provinces could be reconciled. Neither should New Zealand wait for the Great Powers to accept Bangla Desh. Bangla Desh and the Awami League need our support now. An early move by New Zealand and other Commonwealth countries to help this nation could also counter Soviet influence and aid democracy in this important area.—Yours, etc., PHILIP SAXBY. December 27, 1971.
