Less butter consumed

The consumption of butter • in the United Kingdom j dropped by half-an-ounce a 1 head per week in the third quarter of 1971, compared with the same quarter of last year, according to figures released by the Ministry of Agriculture. With butter prices ‘running 50'per cent higher, consumption went down from 5.90 z I a head to 5.40 z. At the same itime, margarine purchases a I head per week rose from !2.90z to 3.10 Z. 1 Cheese consumption, while (slightly down in the third quarter of this year from the (second quarter, is running ahead of comparable periods in 1970. In spite of an over-all drop in the consumption of meat, mutton and lamb purchases were up from 5.60 z a head per week in the third quarter of 1970 to 5.70 z for the same period. Average expenditure on ; food a week rose by only 1 , per cent in the third quarter ' of this year over the second quarter, to stand at £2.34 a 1 person per week.
