Trainer might win double again

The Riccarton trainer, R. B. Taggart, might make history for the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s Cup meeting by winning both T.A.B. straight doubles with two separate combinations.

Alamein and Palley won the first-day double yesterday and none will be prepared to take long odds about Green Light and Just Ace for the corresponding double on the second day of the meeting tomorrow.

Green Light is a lightweight in the first leg, the T. J. Lister Memorial. Ali Cat is the probably favourite after a fast-finishing second in the Timaru Cup, but a decision about a start will not be made till today. Ali Cat’s owner, Mr J. T. Aspinall, intends to accept for the Waikouaiti Cup on Saturday and does not intend to run her in both races, but if he decides on a start at Washdyke the mare will be ridden by A. K. Robinson. Just Ace will be E. J. Didham’s mount in the second leg, the President’s Handicap. This was a successful combination at the recent North Canterbury meeting at Rangiora and another all-the-way win is well within the scope of this chunky chestnut. The Wingatui - trained Honey Queen is likely to be Just Ace’s most formidable rival if she has held her form since her third on the opening day of the meeting. There will be an on-course

concession double on the Alburv Stakes and Pukaki High-weight. Selections:— Noon. I ■ There may have only been five I starters, but it took the Judge a I long time to decide that Geld I Whistle had won the Walter I Weston Memorial Handicap at I New Plymouth yesterday. I The reason for the Judge’s in-1 decision was the particularly I close finish between Gold I Whistle, Wyoming and Sea Chief. I Finally Gold Whistle was I awarded first by a nose. Sea Chief, the hot. favourite, I worked around the outside to I lead for home and at the fur- I long appeared to have the race I run. But in the last few yards I he weakened and both Wyoming I and Gold Whistle Joined him in I the lead. The judge called In Wyoming I tn front of Sea Chief and Gold I Whistle. Then began the wait I and betters were not helped I when the Judge put Gold I Whistle’s number in to the win-1 pert frame only to take it down I A minute later it was back I again and Gold Whistle was I finally the winner. Then there was another long I wait as the judge studied yeti another photograph to decide | second place. This time he could I not make a decision and Sea I Chief and Wyoming dead-heated I for second, a slender nose be-I hind Gold Whistle. I Weights at Kurow WZ. Press Association) ASHBURTON.
