Around The Greens

The entry for the Christ- 1 church Bowling Centre’s open pairs tournament is 416, an increase of 16 on last year. The open singles has drawn 216 entries, an increase of eight. :’s #

Two recent upsets in Elmwood’s singles championship were the defeat of G. P. Thomas by A. J. Baucher, a second-year colt, and H. Holmes’s win over a former champion, P. Barnes. R. Norris is another prominent player who lost last week] and he has now been eliminated. He lost his second life to E. M. McCahon after a tense battle. In the fours, Thomas and |N. Henderson are the remaining two-lifers and the other skips still with a chance are J. C. McDonald, Norris, J. Schultz and R. Green. Thomas and Norris met in a two-lifers game last Saturday, Thomas coming away over the final stages to win 22-15. Not a great deal of progress has been made in the pairs, although one match of note last week was the meeting between A. Gray and C. Baxter. Baxter has been bowling extremely well this season, but he had no answer to Gray, who was in tremendous form, and Baxter conceded on the 18th ■end with the score 24-7 I against him. V

S. E. Lawson and L. C. Lindley are the only unbeaten skips in the fours championship at Christchurch. The one-lifers are E. Trenberth, R. Lulham, T. Kennedy, W. Graham, M. Boon and D. Langley. In the pairs the furthest out on the board are Lawson, who beat Langley, K. Smith, who beat J. Grigor, and A. Glendinning, who eliminated M. Boon and beat Trenberth to retain his two lives. Lulham and R. Sarney have met on each side of the draw. Both games were decided on the final end and the honours are even with a win each.

Recent notable singles results have been D. Nyhane’s win over Trenberth; W. Graham’s loss to G. Barnes and win over W. Fleming; and L. Donnelly’s defeat of

P. Jolly and loss to B. J Johns. * * 6< | The pairs championship at': Linwood has reached the:' quarter-finals stage and theji eight teams remain all [I hold just the one life. The' skips are S. J. Snedden, T.; Forbes, E. M. Russell, K. G. Murray, K. Wilkie, J. J. Anderson, E. Lyons and 1.1 Smith. There were 16 entries ini (the fours championship and! I seven skips qualified fori ipost-section play. They are! Snedden, C. H. Miller, H. i Malzard, L. Muirson, Wilkie, J; P. Anderson and F.! James.

Nine teams qualified in the fours championship at Edgeware, the skips being A. Johnstone, K. Glover, D. Wood, J. Robinson, A. Hay, J. Cowan, R. Spear, A. Clough and J. Speirs. Results of post-section play so far has been Cowan beat Robinson, Johnstone beat Glover, Cowan beat Wood, Spear beat Clough and Hay beat Speirs.

>:« sjc $ The placings given last week for an open triples tournament at Bumside were incorrect. The winning team was, in fact, E. Stanbury, J. Gilmore and P. J. Gibbins and the runners-up D. Lofley. G. Laws and J. Kuchen.

The second round in the combined North Canterbury bowling clubs’ shield competition was played at Waikari last Saturday. .Amberley fared best with two wins and Hawarden and Waikari each had one win. Points are.— Amberley 8, Hawarden 4, Cheviot 2, Waikari 2.

* * * Mount Pleasant has enjoyed a successful run in section A of the Watson Shield competition of late. It challenged South Brighton in November and won 23-16 and since then has resisted challenges from Canterbury and St Martins, the scores being 29-6 and 26-9 respectively. The Mount Pleasant team comprises R. Wilkinson. J. Williamson, L. Morgan and J. R. Saundercock.

A Linwood team of C. Lyons, P. Hughes, F. Burgess and L. Muirson won an all-

day tournament at Mount Pleasant recently. A home ■ team skipped by J. Williamson was second and J. Young’s Lyttelton Waterjsiders four took the third prize. j The two-lifers still in iAmberley’s singles championship are S. Ashworth, I. I Hayes, F. Dobby and R. jllton. The pairs two-lifers [are Dobby, Denton, Clark and [Scott. In both championships I are two-lifers who will meet lin the next round. * * « i The Elmwood club is this season introducing an open tournament with a difference. , It is restricted to leads and ■ seconds and is set down for February 12. Much interest ■ has been shown in the event • and players interested in • taking part should make ■ their entries immediately. ; * * *

The semi-finals have been reached in the fours championship at Dallington and the only skip still holding two lives is D. Stuart. Stuart will play G. Goodall on one side of the draw and last year’s champion, G. Rowland, on the other side.

Stuart, the defending champion, also has two pairs lives still, a position he shares with E. Osborne and L. McKendry. The one-lifers are V. Claridge. Rowland, W. Adamson, R. Pirrie and C. Hutchison.

An interesting pairs match recently was that between Adamson and Claridge and with both teams having to fight for every point the score was only 10-10 after 18 ends. Adamson eventually won 13-12.

Stuart, the singles winner last season, dropped a life in this year’s championship to I. McAllister, who was later eliminated by Rowland. The last two-lifers are S. A. Joyce and I. Scott, who two years ago was a member of Imperial’s winning Robinson Shield team and whose form this season has been outstanding.
