Norwegian ship brings bananas
The Norwegian motor vessel Lorena will discharge 5000 cases of Rarotonga bananas and 270 tons of fruit juice at Lyttelton. Commanded by Captain Erling Goksoyr, 'of Arendal, Norway, the 1331-ton single-screw vessel has a Scottish-born chief officer, but the rest of the officers are Norwegian. The Lorena is owned by L. Lorentzen, of Oslo. She has been in the Pacific area since last August She previously had a New Zealand crew, but on her voyage from Rarotonga she carried a Tongan crew. At Lyttelton today a New Zealand crew will replace the Tongan crew by agreement, and the Tongans will travel as passengers to Auckland when the Lorena sails this week. They will leave the ship at Auckland. Although she is not a passenger ship, the Lorena brought nine Rarotongan Boy Scouts to Lyttelton. They will attend a scout camp at Auckland. Captain Goksoyr said that the Lorena could be completely controlled from the bridge. One man could operate the helm and maneouvre the engine, which had a variable pitch propeller, he said. She has a console bridge with full vision through windows in every direction. Her navigational equipment is up to the most modern standards, and the air-conditioned accommodation is well designed and comfortable. The Lorena is expected to j leave for Auckland tomorrow.
