Miss A. Meates, of Canterbury, yesterday beat Miss P. Monds, of North Shore, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, to reach the later rounds of the open women’s singles at the Taranaki tennis championships at Hawera. Another Canterbury plaver. Miss J. Phillips, beat Miss S. Meachem, of Wellington, 6-2, 6-2. In the under, 19 girls’ singles. Miss P. Bamford (Canterbury) lost to Miss ■ S. Armstrong (Otago), 4-6; 4-6, while Miss Phillips beat Miss S. Little, 6-2, 6-3. Misses C. Newton and Leney, of Canterbury, beat Misses C. Jones and J. Garvie (Auckland). 6-4, 0-6, 6-4, in the * under 19 doubles.
