Sugar to be dearer
The price of sugar, golden syrup, and treacle will be increased by $6.40 a ton today. “This small increase, which is the first alteration to be made to our selling prices since November, 1970, is equivalent to about one-third of a cent per lb retail,” said the New Zealand Sugar Company, Ltd, in a statement yesterday. “The increase is due mainly to the higher cost of raw sugar purchases. All raw sugar imported for refining in New Zealand is bought on the basis of the world free market price, which is subject to fluctuations.
“The new retail price of refined sugar in New Zealand, which includes excise duty levied by the Government of .883 cents per lb ($18.66 a ton) continues to be among the lowest in the world.”
