PAKSONG FALLS
Air support fails (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) VIENTIANE, Dec. 28. Communist forces today captured the key Bolovens Plateau town of Paksong after a 12-hour shelling and ground attack. Initial reports say that Government forces suffered at least 20 dead and more than 50 wounded. Laotian air support failed to halt the advancing North Vietnamese troops, but is believed to have inflicted heavy casualties. The capture of Paksong, a coffee plantation town in the north-eastern part of the plateau on Route 23, has given the Communists virtual control of the Bolovens. Paksong, 290 miles southeast of Vientiane, was captured by North Vietnamese troops last May, and was recaptured by Government forces in heavy fighting on September 16.
