Avon has makings of a strong four

Although the composition of Canterbury rowing crews for this summer have still to be decided, it appears that Avon has the makings of a very promising four from members of last season’s victorious junior eight. The crew could well, be A. Earl, winner of the Canterbury “Oarsman of the

Year” trophy last year and a member of the New Zealand world champion eight, R. Flannagan, T. Walker and D. Lindstrom, who was a member of the New Zealand championship regatta eight last season. Lindstrom, however, has not yet decided whether he will stay in the province this season, but if he does, he will be a valuable oarsman in any combination Avon could produce.

If this crew is formed, it could well prove capable of winning the 1972 championship four title. The Union club will field a strong junior eight this season, made up of‘oarsmen from its maiden four, which took the New Zealand title at the 1970-71 championships. J. Little has hinted that he will cease active rowing this season and if he does it will be a great loss to the club. An oarsman of world standard and a sculler of national renown, Little has won his way to the final of every championship regatta

since his inclusion in the Tokyo Olympic Games eight. Special interest will focus on the formation of the Canterbury Club’s senior eight. Third at the national championships last season, the club has the drive and the talent to produce an even more cohesive combination. The coaches, Messrs T. Leßas and G. Paterson, will be heartened by rumours that T. Coker and R. Collinge, who have just returned from Copenhagen with the world%eating New Zealand eight, will row for Canterbury this season.
