STUDENT EXAMS

Policy being reviewed

fX.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 9. The University Grants Committee has recommended to the universities that they review their policies on the re-enrolment of full-time; students who fail to pass any' of the subjects of their' courses at the end of the first year. The Minister of Education (Mr Taiboys) said that; the review was at present being undertaken. Replying to a Parliamentary question from Mr E. S. F. Holland (Nat., Riccarton) he said he shared the view ex-’ pressed by the committee in; its annual report that the general level of performance by students was distinctly higher; than had been commonly sup- 1 posed. “I also agree.” he said,! “with the further comment that a problem of failure still ■ exists, and on a scale that) demands continuing atten-’ tion.” Under present policies,! possible exclusion of most;; students is assessed on thej' basis of the number of passes ' in a two-year period, rather 1 than one year.
