MARKET CONTINUES TO FIRM UNDER SELECTIVE BUYING

The tone of the market continued to improve in moderately active trading on New Zealand stock exchanges yesterday. There was still some hesitancy, but buying interest made for higher prices in selected areas.

Timber stocks, retailers, and breweries make up most of the rises, the gaps being filled by selected manufacturers and traders. N.Z. Forest remained firm and the price of its shares rose sc. Carter shares and rights were a cent dearer and P.T.Y. shares and rights improved 2c each. Haywrights and Smith and Brown improved 2c each and both breweries were a cent higher. New Zealand Refrigerating finned another 2c to 90c.

A. S. Paterson gained 3c, N.Z.T.S. 2c, and Smith Biolab 3c.

Transport Nelson was very firm, both the shares and rights rising 4c. Radio Hauraki and Wilson Malt “C” were 5c better. New Zealand Insurance traded 15c higher at 340 c, but South British eased 3c to 545 c.

Feltex and Fletcher were easier and Waitaki eased 2c lower.

Merchant Finance was lower again with a 5c loss to 95c.
