Midland bus
Sir,—Having ascertained from Midland Motors that their bus to Darfield stopped on request, I waited with my sons at the correct stop, reassuringly labelled by both N.Z.R. and Christchurch Transport Board. As buses passed in bewildering succession an N.Z.R. to Timaru, a Days to Whitecliffs, a Midland to Methven I found my knowledge of local geography and powers of deduction taxed beyond endurance, and after waving all on with friendly magnaminity, waited in vain for a vehicle that fitted my limited conception of appropriateness. Half an hour later, to mutterings of "What price company co-operation,” and "Hurrah for improved passenger communication,” I suppressed filial disappointment and journeyed westwards by common car. Plainly the moral is: if you wish to catch a Midland bus to Darfield, stand at the N.Z.R. bus stop and hail the Days Motor bus to Whitecliffs.—Yours, etc., J. NUTHALL. September 3, 1971. [Mr L. K. Laugesen, managing director of Midland Coachlines, replies: “We regret that your correspondent suffered inconvenience when wishing to travel to Darfield by our Whitecliffs service. Although the destination displayed on this coach has always been ‘Whitecliffs’, unfortunately the usual Midland coach was undergoing its regular maintenance check. Through increased demand during school holidays no other Midland coach was available and a Day’s Motors coach was used for a limited period.”]
