LIBRARIES IN RUSSIA

More than 130 m readers Soviet citizens are probably the greatest readers in the world. There are now more than 400,000 libraries with a total fund of 2600 million books in the. Soviet Union. Regular readers (not counting schoolchildren) in village and city libraries number 130 million people. There are, of course, no commercial libraries in the Soviet Union, and readers pay nothing for taking books out. The State spends over 100 million roubles annually for replenishing libraries with new books; in the past 10 years some* 20,000 libraries moved into new buildings. Libraries in the Soviet Union have been developing along planned lines which aim towards turning modem libraries from simple book depots into scientific, bibliographical, information, exhibition, lecturing and publishing centres. Professional librarians are helped in this work by readers from all walks of Soviet life. . Today more than 100 Soviet libraries exchange books and information with libraries in the Soviet Union and abroad. The Moscow Foreign Literature Library maintains contacts with 85 countries and exchange books with 1380 foreign libraries,, universities and publishing houses.—Novosti.
