APPROVAL GIVEN
Drainage at Amberley Proposals by Mr E. J. Uprichard to dam a stream and pump water from the Amberley swamp were approved by the North Canterbury Catchment Board yesterday, and objections by farmers were dismissed. The board’s decision was in line with recommendations from a special tribunal which heard submissions and inspected the scene in July. The tribunal comprised Messrs D. A. Lane, A. Dyhrberg, and R. G. Anderson. Mr Upritchard was allowed to construct a concrete and steel control structure across the stream known as the eastern drain at Amberley and to restrict flood flows to 60 cusecs, and to divert up to 7.5 m gallons of water a day from the Amberley swamp by pumping to the Stanton Road drain.
Both rights were granted for 20-year periods, as was a right to discharge the swamp water through the drain into the north branch of the Kowai River. Conditions set by the board allow it to modify or cancel the rights if conditions are not met.
The board accepted the tribunal’s recommendations in dismissing objections from Messrs R. Heslop, C. Millist, B. J. Wilson, R. and B. H. Croft, B. E. Graham and W. R. T. James, and J. A. Johns.
