BAN ON TRAPS SOUGHT

(N.Z, Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 2. A move to introduce a bill which would outlaw spring-jaw animal traps without special permission was made in Parliament today. Mr I. J. Brooks (Lab., Marlborough) sought leave to introduce the Spring Jaw Animal Traps Bill.

He told NZ.P.A. that the bill would prevent any person setting a gin trap or any similar springoperated two-jaw trap without the written consent of either the Agricultural Pest Destruction Council or the Forest Service. The bill would not apply to the “breakback type” of mousetrap or rat-traps. It did not seek to impose a blanket prohibition on the use of the traps. This would not be practicable ’ in some circumstances.

He would like to see a more humane type of trap, he said. There were other means of trapping and other methods of keeping pests under control. There had been numerous cases of dogs and cats suffering as a result of being caught in springjaw traps. The traps could also be a danger to children.
