Radio beacon network

A radio beacon network is being installed at military and civil airfields throughout New Zealand to assist with navigation and to facilitate air traffic control of Royal New Zealand Skyhawk flights. The military airfields which will have this equipment are the Air Force bases at Wigram, Whenuapai, Woodbourne and Ohakea, and civil airfields at Hokitika, Dunedin, Kaitaia, Tauranga, Napier and New Plymouth. The beacons have been placed to give complete coverage of New Zealand air space.

Each beacon consists of two ultra high-frequency (U.H.F.) transmitters coupled to automatic change equipment in case of electronic failure. Although primarily installed for the Skyhawks, the beacons can be used by other military aircraft. Apart from the transmitters, all the equipment for each beacon was designed and built at the No. 1 Repair Depot at Woodbourne. Men from the depot are installing the beacons at Air Force bases.
