MANAPOURI DAM COSTS

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 2. The question of Lake Manapouri was again raised in Parliament when Mr J. A. Walding (Lab., Palmerston North) asked what extra expenditure would be Involved in building a dam strong enough to permit the level of the lake to be raised in the future, compared with the cost of a dam sufficient to keep the lake at its natural high level. The Minister of Electricity (Mr Allen) replied that the extra cost for a dam suitable for maintaining the lake at its average natural level, with provision for later raising, would be $3.5m.
