S.I. Angus sale best on record

Vendors of unled two-year-old bulls had their best sale on record when the Angus Association held its annual South Island sale at the Addington yards yesterday.

It was also the best, sale since 1968, when the average was $504, and in marked contrast to last year, whfen the sale was regarded as the poorest on record.

From a catalouge of 80 entries. 63 bulls were put into the ring, and all were sold at auction for an average of almost $631. For vendors, it was a welcome improvement on last year, when from an offering of 104, only 74 found buyers, for a depressing $357 average.

Yesterday’s satisfactory return was brought about mainly by a much smaller entry than usual, and also because of an improvement in quality. The president of the Angus Association (Mr J. B. Hickman, of Blenheim) described the offering as the best line-up he had seen at this fixture for many years. Strong demand The sale made a quiet start, but because of the re-

duced entry buyers could not afford to sit and wait. As at the Te Mania sale the previous day, the sale ended on a strong note, with the demand still not satisfied.

While the average was more than $6OO, a large proportion of the offering changed hands at $5OO to $550. Only nine lots were sold for less than $5OO.

At the other end of the scale, no spectacular prices were paid. One of five lots from G. G. Gardner (Scargill) topped the sale at $l5OO, and three other lots—all from G. C. Hill • (Geraldine)—fetched $l2OO. Last year’s top price of $BOO was reached or exceeded seven times.

Mr Gardner’s top-priced bull won the Meat and Wool Cup for the best unled bull, and the Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd Challenge Cup for the highest-priced lot at the sale. This bull, and another from the same vendor, also took the Thomas Borthwick and Sons Challenge trophy for the best pair in the judging before the sale. Best averages •With five lots selling from $6OO to the top price. Mr Gardner obtained the best average, $BBO, while Mr Hill, with 15 lots selling from $5OO to $l2OO. averaged $733. G. W. S. ChisnaU (Hawarden) averaged $6OO for six. Ills prices running consistenUy from $5OO ta. $750. Two of these bulls, which sold from $6OO to $7OO had earlier been placed second in the Borthwick Cup.
