Sprouts and carrots among best buys

Brussels sprouts, kumeras, tad carrots are the best buys for the housewife, according to prices at the Christchurch produce markets yesterday.

Brussel sprouts are retailing for 15c to 20c per lb, and kumeras for as little as 20c per lb. Carrots of very good quality are retailing at only 5c to 7c per lb. The markets have no bananas, but a shipment is expected any day. The last of the final shipment of Australian navel oranges is being sold. More lettuces from Nelson are coming into the markets, but are of average quality only and selling for 20c to 25c.

Apples ate quite plentiful —Stunners, Granny Smiths, Delicious, and New Braebums all being of excellent quality, although Stunners are showing signs of storage. There are also plenty of pears, especially Winter Coles and P. Barrys. Other prices (retail unless

otherwise mentioned) at the markets were:—Cabbages

(Bombay): firm, good quality, 23c to 29c; cauliflowers: scarce, 25c to 39c; spinach: 25c a bunch; silver beet: 19c a bunch; celery: scarce, very large heads, 25c to 40c wholesale; parsnips: 15c per lb; onions: good quality, 4c to 7c per lb; swedes: up to 7c per lb; leeks: 23c to 25c a bunch; pumpkins: dwindling supplies, up to 14c per lb; potatoes: new, up to 25c per lb, old, 70c to 75c per 101 b bag; cucumbers: 50c; yams, up to $3 a case wholesale; mushrooms: up to 67c per lb wholesale; hothouse tomatoes: up to 75c per lb; grapefruit: 24c per lb; Chinese gooseberries (Kiwi fruit): $6 a case wholesale; passionfruit: 6c each wholesale; walnuts: 20c per lb wholesale.
