MANCHESTER.
A stubborn 78 by B. W. Luckhurst revived England after the Indian seam bowler, Abid Ali, had destroyed its early batting on the first day of the second cricket test.
England lost its first four 1 wickets for 41 runs, but then 1 recovered to be 219 for seven at the close. t The swing and cut of Abid 1 Ali's bowling gained him the } wickets of the new cap, J. * Jameson, J. El. Edrich, K. W. 1 Fletcher, and B. L. D’Oliveira for figures at that time of ’ four for 19 runs off 14 overs.’ He ended the day with four 1 for 35. 1 Luckhurst, fortunate to escape being caught at legslip when only seven, dug 1
himself in and stayed to save England from humiliation. He scored only 13 runs in the two hours to lunch, but livened up in the afternoon session and hit 11 fours in his 78. He was at the wicket for four hours and a quarter. His best partner was the wicket-keeper, A. P. Knott, who made 41 and helped Luckhunt put on 75 in 105 minutes for the fifth wicket ENGLAND
