“PRESS” CHESS
Shirlev is •r champion Shirley Boys’ High School won the inaugural schools’ chess teams competition sponsored by "The Press” when it convincingly beat Christchurch Boys’ High School, 5-1, in the final last evening. In the play-off for third and fourth positions, St Bede’s College and Cashmere High School drew 3-3, St Bede’s winning on a countback of games over the last three rounds. The Minister of Tourism and Broadcasting (Mr Walker) attended the final, presented the prizes of $6O, $3O and $lO at stake in the competition to the winning team captains. The fourth school, Cashmere, received a book token given by Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd. “Chess is a tremendous game for any young person to take on,” Mr Walker said. Results were: Shirley 5, Christchurch I.—V. Small beat H. J. Bucknell; J. Johnston lost to B. Cowie; B. Goulter beat W. Brown; B. Newman beat E. Dutton; R. Matthews beat B. Wolfe; B. McCulloch beat D. Price. Cashmere 3, St Bede’s 3.—J. Knegt beat S. J. Hunt; P. Tan lost to S. Carr: S. Taylor beat M. Revell; P. Baker beat P. O’Gorman; R. Versteeg fest to R. Stock; D. Clark lost to A. Gavigan. Athletics.—The Jamaican, D. Quarrie, equalled the world 200 metres record when he clocked 19.8 sees at the Pan-American Game in Call, Colombo.
