Arts director leaving

(from Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 6. The Queen Elizabeth Arts Council will appoint a new director later this year.

Announcing this today, the chairman (Mr W. N. Sheat) said the present director, Mr D. Peters, had indicated that he would not seek reappointment when the term of his contract expired in December. Mr Peters was appointed director in December, 1965. “David Peters has served during the most difficult time in the arts council’s history, and he will be missed,” Mr Sheat said. “However, we understand that his knowledge and extensive experience will not. be lost to New Zealand, as he intends to stay in the country and continue to work for the arts.” Mr Sheat said the position would be advertised.

Applications would be widely sought, and knowledge of New Zealand conditions .would be emphasised.

“An understanding of the New Zealand cultural scene is highly desirable as far as prospective applicants are concerned,” Mr Sheat said. A Welshman, Mr Peters is a former deputy director of the Welsh Arts Council. He was director of the Adelaide Festival of the Arts before his appointment to the Queen Elizabeth Arts Council.
