Opinions differ Differing opinions as to why trout numbers in the lower Selwyn River appear to have declined were ascribed to fishermen by the North Canterbury Catchment Board’s investigating officer (Mr R. B. Ayrey) in a report to the board on water quality in the Selwyn. Some fishermen, he said, complained that the fish had declined of recent years, with an increase- in Lake Ellesmere weed restricting access to fishing grounds. Others said that mis was a relatively recent phenomenon. Older residents said it was part of a 10-year cycle, and that there was now far less weed in the lake than there was 40 or 60 .years ago. Lake Ellesmere, opened to the sea on July 22, had fallen to a level of I.lft yesterday, and the outlet was . still running the chief engineer (Mr E B Dalmer) told a meeting of -the North Canterbury Catchment Board ywterday.

Meat for Japan.—The Japanese ship Itohamu Maru No. 1 is loading 440 tons of mutton for Japan at Lyttelton. She will load a larger quantity at Bluff.
