FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A depression over southern New Zealand is weakening and moving away to the south. A weak cold front in the south Tasman Sea should reach the south-west of the South Island tomorrow afternoon. An anticyclone and its associated ridge of high pressure will move towards the rest of New Zealand during the day. Forecast:

Canterbury.—Light to moderate winds, mainly northerly; fine, becoming mild during the day. Marlborough and Nelson.—North ito north-west winds, fresh at times about Cook Strait but otherwise light or moderate; fine, becoming mild during the day. Buller and Westland.—Moderate southwesterlies developing; isolated showers, but long fair periods; moderate temperatures. Outlook.— Fine in most places, but partly cloudy with a few scattered showers in Westland.
