Hiroshima Day
Sir,—Friday, August 6, is Hiroshima Day. One practical way of recognising this day is by urging our Government to protest yet more strongly against the French tests in the Pacific. The Rarotonga report (Tuesday's issue), indicates the far-reaching effects on the islands of both tests and French occupation. New Zealand is showing support for its nearest neighbours by hosting the Pacific Islands conference this week. We should also work with the Pacific Islands in opposition to the tests. Hiroshima Day reminds us that the shadow of the nuclear bomb is close to our door and closer still to the doors of our neighbours.. World survival requires that nuclear disarmament be recognised as the only realistic policy (it is hopeful that China’s admission to the United Nations has suddenly become “realistic"). The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament is marking Hiroshima Day by a candle-lit vigil on the riverbank on Friday evening.— Yours, etc., ALISON NEALE. Secretary, Christchurch C.N.D. August 3, 1971.
