Mining shares improve in Australia

Mining shares rallied in moderately active trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. Oil stocks were variable while a firmer tone was apparent in the industrial section. Whim Creek showed one of the heaviest mining losses with a fall of 60c to 440 c after its report. Spargos stood out with a 30c gain at 130 c. Poseidon closed 100 c higher at 2350 c after earlier selling as high as 2450 c. Heavy - weights were stronger with Bougainville Mining recovering 20c to 280 c. C.R.A. gained 16c to 800 c, W.M.C. put on 4c to 340 c while slight losses were shown by Hamersley at 370 c and Metals Ex at 500 c.

Details from the Minsec liquidator of acceptable tenders sparked a few rises. Aberfoyle jumped 42c to 150 c and Cudgen rose 10c to 145 c, but Consolidated Rutile eased 5c to 245 c.

Offers by tender for the Aberfoyle fully-paid shares were 216 c each. Cudgen 165 c, and Cons Rutile 247 c. Great Boulder recovered 10c to 195 c, Queensland Mines fell 20c to 1300 c, and Meekatharra rose 4c to 162 c. Among the oils, Santos gained 10c to 340 c, Magellan firmed 5c to 215 c, and 2c gains were shown by Crusader, and Oil Search. Mid East also put on 2c, to 85c. Woodside shed 5c to 130 c, and Ampol Ex lost 5c to 110 c.

Major industrial gains included 8.H.P., 15c higher at 1340 c, Rothmans rose 10c to 225 c, and C.S.R., finned 8c to 526 c.

A.G.I. gained 3c to 151 c, Brambles put on 2c to 193 c, and Olympic Consolidated rose 4c to 85c.
