Swedes and celery good buys this week

Southland swedes, at 5c to 7c a pound, and celery at 23c to 35c a head, should be the best vegetables for retailers to buy this week, judging by prices at Christchurch produce markets. There are good supplies of Australian navel oranges, which will be available in the shops for the standard price of 20c per lb-in the city and 21c in the country. Another shipment is expected next week

Ecuadorian bananas again will be available at the reduced price df 15C per lb, but because of steam rot bananas were being auctioned at three Christchurch markets and will be available in many shops at well below the usual price. Apart from another shipment of Australian oranges soon, there will after next week be little imported fruit available for some time in shops.

Vegetable prices Among popular winter vegetables, cabbages will sell in the shops for 19c to 25c each, and cauliflowers, some showing signs of recent frosts, will cost 25c to 35c. Spinach is expected to re-

tail for about 25c a bunch. Because of frost damage, silver beet has risen sharply in price to 19c per lb. Brussels sprouts of average quality will cost about 25c per lb. The price of carrots is steady at 6c to 10c per lb, and parsnips will cost 12c to 19c per lb, according to variety. Potatoes continue to fetch a high {Mice, selling wholesale at the markets at $2.30 to $3 a sugar-bag. ’Kumaras are scarce and will cost-up to 29c per- lb. There is an increasing demand for yams, which will be available in the shops at 29c per'lb also. Pumpkins Will cost 4c to 6c per' lb, all' varieties being available. Onions should cost 5c to 8c per lb, leeks 25c to 30c a bunch, and white turnips 12c per lb. . Out-of-season vegetables grown in hothouses include a reasonable supply of cucumbers, which. will cost 50c each. Lettuces will retail for about 39c each, and tomatoes brought 60c a ' lb jn the markets. Mushrooms dearer Mushrooms have been slightly dearer in the markets this week, at 70c per lb. Rhubarb will cost up to 25c a bunch in the shops, but Chinese gooseberries and tamarillos will be very dear, fetching $6 and $4.60 a small case respectively in the markets.

There is a steady supply of North Island mandarins, the best selling for about 49c per lb retail. A shipment of Pacific Island coconuts sold at $8 a sack in the markets, equivalent, to 14c each. The retail price will depend on size. '

Delicious and Granny Smith apples remain plentiful. Winter Cole pears will continue to be available, but the popular pineapple variety will finish next week.
